Desktop publishing is the process of creative documents and instructional materials by using online software and programs. Distance and virtual learning has increased the need for teachers to look outside of traditional pen-and-paper media to provide material for their students and online classrooms. This can include using Google Docs to create templates for resumes or in-class exercises like close-reading, or Google Drawings for you or your students to create posters for your virtual classroom!
Although these types of materials can be created "irl" and uploaded, desktop publishing makes it convenient for teachers and students to quickly create, save, and distribute information. Students learn that there are multiple ways to go about completing or creating work for an assignment, and can be asked to weigh the benefits of completing work through desktop publishing versus more traditional methods.
Below are some examples of classroom motivational and procedural posters that can be used online or in-person in your classroom, created using Google Drawings!
This method of desktop publishing corresponds with the International Society for Technology in Education's Standards for Creative Communicators:
- 6a: Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication
- 6b: Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations
